SÃO PAULO, Brazil — On Friday, March 27, LFA debuted in São Paulo for the first time at the Centro Esportivo Pelezão in front of a sold-out crowd for LFA 229, presented by Monster Energy. LFA 229 was headlined by a welterweight showdown between The Ultimate Fighter Season 31 veteran Richard Martins and Muay Thai specialist Vanderlei “Soul Glo” Gonçalves.
Gonçalves showcased his Muay Thai skills throughout much of the fight with a combination of kicks, knees, and punches, controlling the majority of the bout against Martins. But as with any fight, it only takes one moment—and that moment came for Martins with 1:05 left in the third round. Martins’ body shot stunned Gonçalves and brought him down. From there, Martins took care of business, finishing the fight at the 4:04 mark. The win improved Martins’ record to 11-1, while Gonçalves dropped to 9-3.
In the co-main event, Felipe dos Santos earned a decisive submission win over Jenilto Matos, securing an impressive triangle choke at the 1:43 mark. Dos Santos moved to 10-3.
LFA goes back-to-back with a return to Shawnee, Oklahoma, for LFA 230 at the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort. The event will be headlined by a pivotal bantamweight matchup between Dominican Republic standout Micaias “The Pink Ranger” Ureña (11-3) and American contender Xavier Franklin (6-1-1).
